OUR MOST IMPORTANT COMMUNITY CRIME CONCERN

The most important community concern regarding crime prevention is the selection of our new Police Chief!!! The number of police staff vacancies, patrolling, jail, prosecution, parole, juvenile crime & detention, tourism, and loss of business all are important pieces of the puzzle, but if we fail to hire the most qualified person in the United States as our next Chief, the whole community is at risk.

I believe that we need community input in selecting the new Chief. Each one of you needs to be heard. How is the Chief hired? What are the criteria for the new Chief? How long have we used this criteria and should it be updated? How do you measure the success of the Police Force? What do we want the new Chief to do? How important is cost when hiring the best? Is the best worth more? Can we supplement the Chief’s salary either through the budget or private funds? Is performance-based pay practical?

These are just a few of the questions that come to mind.
