Reuben M. Greenberg
BIOGRAPHY
Chief Reuben M. Greenberg was appointed Chief of Police of the Charleston Police Department on 12 April 1982 and Chief Emeritus on 17 August 2005.
He was formerly the Undersheriff of the San Francisco County Sheriff’s Department; a Major with the Savannah, Georgia Police Department; Chief of Police with the Opa-Locka, Florida Police Department; Chief Deputy Sheriff of Orange County, Florida Sheriff’s Department; Director of Public Safety of Mobile, Alabama and a Deputy Director of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Chief Greenberg received a BA Degree from San Francisco State University in 1967, a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969, and a Masters Degree in City Planning also from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.
He was Adjunct Professor at California State University at Hayward, The Citadel, College of Charleston and Charleston Southern University. He taught Political Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Criminal Justice at Florida International University. He has taught numerous courses in corrections, criminal justice, community policing, management, police ethics, background investigations, public administration, sociology, and political science. He has conducted law enforcement seminars and training sessions in numerous countries.
Chief Greenberg was a faculty member at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Florida International University, University of Central Florida, Armstrong Atlantic State University and International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary.
Chief Greenberg is a member of the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He is a past president of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers’ Association.
He is a board member of the South Carolina Commission on Racial Relations, the South Carolina Crime Victims Compensation Board, the Roper Hospital Board of Directors and the South Carolina Sentencing Commission. Former member National Institute of Corrections Advisory Board. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, Larry King Live and the McNeil/Lehrer News Hour.
He has authored a number of police-related articles and has appeared as a guest columnist for several newspapers, most notably the Detroit News. His first book, “Let’s Take Back Our Streets�, was published in November, 1989.
Chief Greenberg is the recipient of the 1989 Achievement Award from the Foundation for Improvement of Justice; in September, 1991, he was named Justice Professional of the Year by the Southern Criminal Justice Association and in September, 1994, he received the Free Spirit Award from the Freedom Forum and in May, 2002, he received the Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from the Medical University of South Carolina. He also received an Honorary Doctorate from the College of Charleston, The Citadel, and John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
